  1. Hello,

Thank you very much. I did all the reconfigurations as you suggested and am hoping it will work for me. I do realise that the month of July is the month of browser bugs so do not expect to see Firefox loading much faster for now.

I chanced upon your site when I was searching for an answer as to why when I minimised one Firefox window whilst having another opened on Desktop, after a few minutes, the minimized window would sort of flash (sorry, this is the best description I can give) across my Desktop- I don’t see the window (the minimised one that ‘flashed’) as such but when I try to restore the minimized window, it can only be restored to Maximum size and not the original size that I had it opened in the first place. Would you have an answer as to why this happens? Sorry if this sounds garbled. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am running Firefox 1.5.0.4

    Many thanks again.

  2. Be careful with “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” as some websites may block your IP if you attempt to many requests as its a huge resource drain for the server.

A better option would be the “FasterFox” plugin for FireFox, which does the tweaks for you in a non-destructive way.

  4. A lot of performance problems are caused by problems with extensions,
I’m sure this’ll be very useful for many people:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

  5. Do any of these “twaeks” work or help with other Mozilla browsers? I am specifically interested in Seamonkey, and could really stand to improve performance on my very s-l-o-o-o-w machine (I CAN’T switch to Firefox because some very out-of-date software causes dependency problems).

  6. the tweaks used to work on early versions of Flock, and they work in Swiftfox. They work in early verisons of Camino too. But i never tried them on Mozilla or Seamonkey.

  7. Have previously made all the config settings you suggest and most do very little. The minimize hack doesn’t work at all. Checked system memory useage and with 4 tabs open it’s 339 megabytes, after minimizing — still 339 megabytes. Closed all tabs — still 339 megabytes. Quit, opened 4 different pages — 690 megabytes. Minimized — 690 megabytes. Closed all tabs — 690 megabytes. Waited 10 minutes with no browser windwo open at all — 690 megabytes.

I’m not enough of a tech geek to know why it hogs and keeps so much open system memory, but it does, even with every one of the listed hacks in place.

I love Firefox for many reasons, but speed isn’t one of them. It really is glacially slow compared to IE and Opera.

  8. […] So it is a feature that has caused the pain. From Element 14 […]

  9. […] Element14 blog published some settings that should reduce memory usage in Firefox. I’m currently testing those settings, So I don’t know yet if they work or not. I like Firefox as it’s a very stable application. But it’s frustating sometimes, when you look at process memory usage: sometimes Firefox end using about 200 MB. This Memory problem with Firefox explains why I’m still using Maxthon. Maxthon’s memory usage never exceed 50 MB (it’s what I noticed from my experience). I tried many settings n the Firefox config windows to reduce those “memory leaks”. But none were really efficient. Let’s see if those new settings works. The Firefox Memory Usage FQA contains also useful information about known leaking Firefox extension. 10. I would hesitate from applying either the fasterfox or the pipelining hack listed – it’s very poor ettiquette for a webuser. The multiple requests all hammer the web page’s server, and if multiple users are all pipelining, it degrades performance for everyone else. Often times it will result in your ip being banned by an admin if it’s noticed.

  12. Sorry to burst your bubble but fx does have quite a few memory leaks and then some thanks to poorly coded extensions! Install the leak monitor extension and you’ll be bugged to a point about memory leaks that you would end up uninstalling it.

  16. Cable Vision, my broadband ISP recently introduced an improvement in their already high speed service with OPtimum Boost which has been clocked at up to 30 Mbps downstream and up to 5Mbps upstream so my service is about as fast as you can get this days for home subscribers., and my computer’s hgot 1G RAM and 3.0 Pentium chip so its pretty fast.

I was very excitedly pleased to see a significant improvement
in the performance of the way this thing moves!!

This post is several months old so I do hope you get to see this in accepting my utmost thanks and appreciation for posting this.

You know, its seldom that you get to see real benefit from
all the tips , tweaks and tech advice accumulated from all over the web in the past few years but this, this has made more of difference than all of them combined.

    Thanks again very much,

  18. Notice how the ONLY bad thing most can say about Firefox is that it has a “memory leak”. The fact that it is far superior in standards support and customization means nothing. All the great extensions available for it isn’t enough to make them at least say, hey this is great. It seems like those who pounce on anything pro-firefox with the obligatory “memory leak” reference can’t find anything negative to say about it so that’s all they can come up with.

  20. Firefox memory leaks are a bigger problem than people realize the discussion of which has been ruminating for several months about the frequent Firefox crashes associated with the substantial memory leaks .

I was particularly prone to the frequent inexplicable crashes
throughout the day for several weeks because i just love having all of the very latest Firefox extension/ add-on, browser gizmos as soon as they come out not having ever heard of memory leaks and neither did anyone of those so-called Mozilla genius administrators at the Mozilla Firefox
    forums site at the time.

The crashes always nearly occurred as I was trying to
log on to g-mail and i soon find out that the firefox google toolbar was particulary susceptible to memory leaks.
While the situation did improve after i dumped the Google Toolbar and other power hogging extensions the power drain as a result of Firefox’s overall problem was something I always aware of with its sloth-like browser performance

Still ,the memory leak problem is uppermost in Mozilla’s
mind with a Firefox memory leak detector extension and the
Nightly Tester Tool extension has an option to detect
    memory leaks.

My memory leak problem was eventually resolved after discovering this excellent guide to dealing with the problems
    associated with it available here;
    CyberNet Technology news
This May Help Your FF Memory leak

  21. It may not be faulty coding, but it’s certainly faulty design…

When Firefox is busy consuming most of the memory on a machine and forcing it to a slow crawl because the OS spends so much time thrashing, for a use case that’s represents only 39% of user behaviour then it’s a bug…

  22. Nice to know it’s not a bug… especially as my intuition tells me that when a program like Fifrefox hogs 250 MB, then it’s certainly not working very effectively. And if I then click on exit, Firefox uses at least 95 of my processor power and I have to end the process. 😦
If that isn’t a bug, I don’t know what is.

    Martin

  23. Ok SillyWampa, I’ll bite.

Nowhere in any of the content did I see an assault on the quality of Firefox compared to the competition. What I have seen are people who are interested in improving the product pointing out some areas that need to be addressed to make it an even better product. Please take the trolling elsewhere. Thank you.

Not in any way a proponent of any thing. Just annoyed at trolls.

“content.notify.ontimer must be set to true for this preference to take effect.”

  25. Keep in mind that IE is built into the OS. Firefox is not. If IE was a standalone browser I am sure it will consume the same amount of memory as FF. IE7 has comparable memory usage as FF.

  26. Argh …. would the people who install masses of extensions please leave the planet.
    Now
No, really – just leave …. thanks.

  29. […] In this article, element14 (I guess its the nickname) states that Firefox has no “memory bug”. While this is not totaly true, it sure has some, the huge memory usage is in fact due to the fact that Firefox stores the last five browsed pages, for each tab. 40. “The fact that it is far superior in standards support and customization means nothing. — SillyWampa”
Actually, if you really want to be truthful:
Opera’s standards support is superior to Firefox.

    Firefox 2.0 RC2 still can’t pass the Acid2 test.
I personally have been a Firefox user since 0.2 so keep that in mind if you respond.

Regardless, talk about standards compliance & customization are completely off topic in this particular instance as the topic is about memory usage.

As richmanwisco stated, people simply want to improve Firefox by pointing out various issues that they have found and believe needs to be addressed.

Set the plugin for “optimized performance” then set the values of “network.http.max-connections-per-server, persistant-connections-per-proxy, persistant-connections-per-server, and pipelining.maxrequests” all to a value of 6. Then do the “initialpaintdelay” tweak. You’ll get decent performance without pounding someone’s poor server.

To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited less than 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox 1.5 implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last five session history entries for each tab. This is a lot of data. If you have a lot of tabs, Firefox’s memory usage can climb dramatically. It’s a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web. […]

  60. I did the minimize trick, and watched my memory decline immediately from 38M to 5M. But then it climbed right back up — I’m guessing the javascript mail-app doesn’t like getting trimmed.

So a return to pre-minimization doesn’t mean a bug in the browser itself, it could be the app you’re running.

  61. BS. Firefox has memory bugs and your optimizations do nothing for the problems that I see with it. Try opening a few web pages in firefox, then leave firefox running for a week straight. If your computer is still running at full speed, you can tell me that Firefox doesn’t have memory issues. Just leaving Firefox up and running (whether minimized or not) for any length of time will kill your system. I’m willing to bet that a system with Firefox running for a month without closing the page would make the entire system unusable until firefox is closed.

That being said, I still love firefox and use it exclusively at home, I just wish they would fix the memory leaks.

Alter the entries as follows: Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true” Set “network.http.proxy.pipel ining” to “true” Set “network.http.pipelining. maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. 3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.de lay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages faster now More options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– > Interger or String network.dns.disableIPv6: set “false” “content.notify.backoffco unt”: set “5″ “plugin.expose_full_path” : set “true”. “ui.submenuDelay”: set “0″ (zero) Kill RAM usage to 10mb when FF is minimized This little about:config hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized 1. Press Enter. 4. Now select True and then press Enter. 5. Restart Firefox. Ok I hope this makes a few people’s browsing experience a bit better with Firefox and debunks a myth about their being a bug. As for some of you others, wth are you doing wrong ? the only thing on my pc that leaks memory is everquest 2 and the only time my pc shuts down is if I have a power out or run out of things to d/l. Never had a problem with FF using lots of memory and ebay browsing can require many open pages.

I definitely think there are memory leaks in Firefox. […]

  91. How about instead of “tweaking” your way around firefox “features”, just get a real browser.

    IE7 rules all browsers!!!

    Period.
