1. Install software needed by VMware Workstation

  1. Install packages to build the kernel modules
    yum install gcc gcc-c++ kernel-devel
  2. Check the running kernel matches the kernel headers
    uname -r # running kernel
    rpm -q kernel-devel # installed kernel headers
  3. If the two versions do not match, run
    yum -y upgrade kernel kernel-devel
  4. Find out where the kernel headers are (you may need this later)
    ls -d /usr/src/kernels/$(uname -r)*/include

2. Download VMware Workstation

  1. Go to if you haven’t already.

3. Do the install

  1. Uncompress Workstation
    tar zxvf VMware-workstation-5.5.4-44386.tar.gz
  2. Change directory
    cd vmware-distrib/
  3. Run the installer
  4. When asked Do you want to run, answer “No”. You will need to patch.
  5. Backup
    cp /usr/bin/ /usr/bin/
  6. Patch
    cd /tmp/
    tar zxvf vmware-any-any-update113.tar.gz
    cd vmware-any-any-update113/
  7. When asked Do you want to run, answer “Yes”.
